GT Karakoram 1.0 29er 2013 Specification

Verdict: The Karakoram is a good looking, well specced, smooth riding 29er at a great price. It’s a little heavier than the average 26in-wheeled mountain bike at this price, and you can feel that in acceleration and on climbs. But fast tyres, a good suspension fork and some very classy finishing touches all help to boost performance in other areas. Its aesthetics also make it stand out from the crowd – important in a market where so many bikes look so similar.

The Karakoram is a 29er MTB that performs well regardless of how you ride it and what you take it over. With Rockshox XC30 forks, Shimano components and powerful Avid Elixir disc brakes, this machine will get you through all the mud, sweet and tears.

The Karakoram is ridden by Race Whippets and Weekend Warriors alike and feature great strength and durability with a lightweight frame and great reliability. This means these bikes are equally at home on the singletrack, the sprint for the finish line or a Sunday thrash with your friends.

The Karakoram is a great choice if you want a step up, higher specc’d MTB bike within GT’S trial bikes range. From the all-day ride ability of the Sensor, to the classic aluminium hardtail approach of the Avalanche and Aggressor, there’s a trail bike for whatever you ride however you ride it.

Ride & handling: Easy rolling feel with comfort and stability on difficult terrain.

Scott Scale 35 2012 Specification

Verdict: The HMF carbon fibre Scott Scale 35 2012 Mountain Bike is designed for the XC racer on a budget. Built with a Rock Shox Reba and mix of SRAM parts, you’ll get a great race bike without breaking the bank.

The new 2012 version of the bike is light but stiff. Using the tapered head tube and increased structural strength in the high load areas achieved by producing the down tube, head tube and top tube in a single process adding extra fibres to the areas which take the greatest stress; this process increases the stiffness of the bike by between 10-15% over the 2011 model.

Felt Edict Elite 2012 Specification

Verdict: The Felt Edict Elite is built from the inside out with Felt’s UHC advanced carbon fibre. Shimano XT components deliver crisp shifting and precise stopping power and Mavic Crossride wheels wrapped by Continental XKing tyres keep you in control.

Felt’s proprietary FAST suspension and 100mm of RockShox suspension make for a smooth and responsive ride. The Edict Team is one great XC bike.

The carbon construction on the Edict looks first rate. Looking inside the frame you can see that it has been formed around hard moulds. This produces a very smooth finish both inside and out, reducing the chance of irregularities such as folded or kinked fibres. It also allows a high level of compaction, ensuring that any excess resin is squeezed out and allowing the carbon to achieve a higher strength to weight ratio. The junction around the head tube, down tube and top tube is massive, while the top tube tapers down to comparatively fine dimensions. There’s an acre of standover clearance thanks to the radically sloping top tube and plenty of room for a full-size water bottle too—all good stuff really.
